All three can help you learn biology, but in different ways: a structured course, a library of videos and exercises, and an AI you can ask anything. This comparison comes from Codon One itself, so I've tried to be fair to the other two.
| Codon One | Khan Academy | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kind of tool | Biology course with lessons, quizzes and flashcards | Free learning platform with videos, articles and exercises | General-purpose AI assistant (chatbot) |
| How you learn | Short illustrated lessons, a quiz after each section, flashcards | Videos and articles, then practice exercises | By conversation: you ask, the AI answers; a study mode can guide you step by step |
| Biology content | 6 modules: 627 lesson pages, 300 quiz questions, 251 glossary terms | Courses such as High school biology and AP/College Biology | No fixed course; it answers whatever you ask |
| Subjects | Biology | Many subjects, from math to history | Any topic |
| Who makes the content | Daniel Gebert, PhD (biology) | Khan Academy's content team | An AI model, anew for each answer |
| Reliability | Every page is checked before release; you can report errors from any lesson | Planned and edited course content | Often helpful, but it can make mistakes that sound convincing |
| Cost | Module 1 free; the other modules are one-time purchases, no subscription | Free (nonprofit) | Free plan and paid plans |
| Devices | iPhone and iPad; Android in testing | Web, iPhone and iPad, Android | Web, Windows, macOS, iPhone and iPad, Android |
An AI chatbot answers in seconds and adapts to your questions, but it can be wrong even when the answer sounds convincing. In a 2025 study from the universities of Kassel and Cologne, 241 upper-secondary students learned about evolution either with ChatGPT or with an ordinary internet search. The ChatGPT group improved only slightly, yet came away more willing to use AI tools regularly. The researchers recommend using such tools reflectively and critically.
They work well side by side. Learn a topic in Codon One, watch a Khan Academy video when you'd like a second explanation, and ask an AI when something is still unclear. Codon One has its own AI study helper for that: Ribo answers questions about the lesson page, glossary entry or missed quiz question you're on. Like any AI, Ribo can make mistakes, so the lessons remain the reference.
