Atom

Basic unit of a chemical element

Contains protons, neutrons, and electrons

An atom is the smallest unit of an element that retains that element's identity. Its nucleus contains positively charged protons and uncharged neutrons, while negatively charged electrons occupy shells around the nucleus. The number of protons defines the element, and the arrangement of electrons determines how the atom can interact in chemical bonds.
