Buffer

System that resists pH change

Often a weak acid and its conjugate base

A buffer system limits changes in pH when acids or bases are added. It usually consists of a weak acid and its corresponding base, which can release or absorb protons as needed. In human blood, the carbonic acid-bicarbonate buffer helps keep pH within a narrow range compatible with life.
