Measure of proton concentration

Low pH is acidic; high pH is basic

pH is a logarithmic measure of hydrogen ion concentration in solution. A lower pH means more free protons and greater acidity; a higher pH means fewer free protons and greater basicity. Because the scale is logarithmic, a solution at pH 6 has ten times more free protons than a solution at pH 7.
