A peptide bond forms when the carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts with the amino group of another, releasing water in a condensation reaction. Repeated peptide bonds create a polypeptide chain with an N-terminus and a C-terminus. The sequence of amino acids in this chain is the protein's primary structure.
