Acids release protons; bases accept protons
Together control pH
An acid releases hydrogen ions (protons, H+) in aqueous solution, increasing proton concentration. A base accepts protons or releases hydroxide ions, reducing proton concentration. Strong acids and bases dissociate almost completely, while weak acids and bases only partially dissociate and are central to biological buffer systems.
