Water

Universal biological solvent

Polar molecule forming hydrogen bonds

Water is a small polar molecule made of two hydrogen atoms covalently bound to oxygen. Because oxygen pulls electrons more strongly, water has partial charges and forms hydrogen bonds with other water molecules and many solutes. These properties make water an excellent solvent and a stable medium for biochemical reactions in cells.
